Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Photo of North Terrace, Adelaide

An apprenticeship or traineeship offers you an excellent head start into an industry, and may be used as a stepping stone to further education or a future career. There is a wide range of industries and occupations to choose from, offering you the opportunity to gain skills and experience in the field. You will learn and train on the job, earning a training wage while achieving a valuable qualification that is nationally recognised by employers.

Apprenticeships and traineeships are available to individuals from the age of 15, from school students to school leavers, from people within industry to the unemployed.

The teaching strategies for apprentices and trainees are developed in conjunction with industry groups, meaning that the qualifications and skills learnt at TAFE SA are relevant to industry and the current workplace. TAFE SA offers a supportive infrastructure and strong partnerships with employers, trainers and industry bodies throughout Australia.

For more information on apprenticeships and traineeships, you can browse the links to the right, or see the Australian Apprenticeships website for School Students and Job Seekers.

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a training program designed to provide you with employment and at the same time enable you to learn a trade and gain nationally recognised qualifications. You will receive structured training on and off the job in a full time paid position, which can last up to four years. The apprenticeship is a contract of training between you, your employer, a training provider like TAFE SA, and the South Australian Government.

What is a traineeship?

A traineeship provides you with employment that enables you to learn about a non-trade area and gain nationally recognised qualifications. You will train both on and off the job in a full time or part time position. Traineeships usually last up to 12 months, but sometimes extend for a longer period.
