Untitled by Merri Beale
Matter - a group exhibition of new works by artists Merri Beale, Kate Cullity, Gritta Walker and Sam Jeffries - will be held at the Light Square Gallery as part of the 2009 SALA Festival.
As past students of TAFE SA Adelaide Centre for the Arts, it is quite fitting that these four women now return as artists in their own right, to showcase new works in the form of low relief 3D and sculpture. A variety of unusual media has been explored, including recycled materials, found objects, ceramics, textiles and rags, lead, wax, tar and eggshells.
Each artist has developed work in response to their immediate surroundings with a focus on what they identify as the fundamental, simple and compelling. Drawing on the parameters of the local, the ‘backyard’ or the internal self, the work is an interpretation of what matters to each of the four artists.
“One of our core preoccupations is to produce work which speaks about environmental and sustainable issues, social and cultural shifts as well as the part we play as individuals,” says Sam Jeffries. “It is our hope that this exhibition will bring people together to observe, reflect and perhaps find a connection with what matters to them.”
Matter is presented with the support of Arts SA.
TAFE SA Adelaide Centre for the Arts is a Helpmann Academy partner school.
