'In 2005 I took a year off from my job as a hydro geologist to pursue one of my other passions, the outdoors. My aim was to gain some nationally-recognised qualifications in a short space of time and at a minimum of cost, so I could pursue paid employment in the outdoor field.

'The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation offered by TAFE SA fulfilled all of my expectations and surpassed most of them. Training in technical skills was practical and thorough and emphasised the need to be professional and safe at all times.  Training in leadership and interpersonal skills started me on the path I’m still following, as I try to become an effective trainer and teacher.

'The Centre for Recreation, Sport and Tourism was a great place to study. The lecturers were very helpful and understanding which provided a very relaxed atmosphere to learn in. This was a huge advantage for me in completing my two Diplomas. I thought the facilities were first class, especially the computer room, library and fitness centre, which created a positive atmosphere amongst the students.

'Studying the Diploma of Sport and Recreation and the Diploma of Event Management has assisted me in more ways than any other to get where I am now - the Personal Assistant to the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of Football Federation SA. Personally and professionally the course has made me more confident and aware of what is expected within the sporting sector. The majority of the core subjects undertaken within the course cover all fields of my day to day tasks at work. From work experience that I undertook at the South Australian Soccer Federation, much networking and other experiences through my two years at TAFE, my diligence slowly but surely paid off at the end of 2005.'

I have now gained employment with Operation Flinders as the Event Manager for the Trailblazer Challenge, thanks to the skills, knowledge and contacts I made through my TAFE studies.'

'Throughout 2006 I studied the Diploma of Recreation and sport and the Diploma of Event Management through the Centre of Recreation, Sport and Tourism at Regency TAFE. The course was very hands on and provided me with current, up to date information and skills needed to work in the sport and recreation industry. Ample opportunities were provided to work in the industry on a volunteer basis and network with industry representatives. As part of the course I worked on events such as the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup 2006 held in Melbourne, the Trailblazer Challenge held by Operation Flinders and SAPSASA (South Australian Primary Schools Sports Association) events. The course has led me to work for Adelaide City Council at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre as the new Swim School Supervisor.'

Bec Shaw  (2005 Graduate)

'Completing the Double Diploma in Sport and Recreation and Event Management at TAFE SA in 2005 was one of the highlights of my education. It provided me with a recognised Certificate and two Diplomas in just two years, all for such a reasonable price with no debt.

'Highlights from the year include volunteering in events such as the Adelaide International Horse Trials, the Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive and the 10th Australian Masters Games, making a valuable contribution to the end result of each event. Actually having the event managers of these events offer the opportunity to return next year and provide a letter of recommendation is a great feeling.

'I am proud to say that I gained my education from TAFE SA. Reading texts books is one thing but hands on experience is priceless. We had the opportunity to design, bid for and implement our own event; to actually put in place the information obtained from the course. Working together in small groups enabled us to use other team mates' strengths and to bond as a group. I have built some strong friendships and networks through completing the Diploma.

'The experience and knowledge gained from my studies has enabled me to be successfully employed in the Sport and Recreation industry. I am currently employed as the Administration and Events Coordinator for Sandstorm Sports in Brisbane.'
