Panasonic World Solar Challenge

The Panasonic World Solar Car Challenge is a major project for TAFE SA staff and students across varying programs and provides learning experiences in the areas of:

  • Electrical
    Staff and students have particularly worked on Kelly through construction & wiring, including the new battery and have had a significant role in configuration of the solar array. Studying a TAFE SA Electrical course will also prepare you for employment in a further range of roles including airconditioning, refrigeration and electrical. ...read more
  • Electronics
    Electronics staff & students have contributed significantly on Kelly through development of all key electronics aspects, including controls, instrumentation and telemetry systems. Studying a TAFE SA Electronics course will also prepare you for employment in a further range of roles including Electroincs and computer systems engineering. ...read more
  • Mechanical
    Staff & students have worked on the front suspension of Kelly and have constructed the battery box. Their role has also included repairs to the trailer, an important link to the Kelly Car Challenge participation. Studying a TAFE SA Mechanical Engineering course will also prepare you for employment in a further range of roles. ...read more
  • Renewable Energy
    Students gain knowledge through use of learning resources such as the solar electronic control systems, maximum power point trackers, solar panel connections and stand alone battery technology.
    Regency Campus has been providing Renewable Energy studies since 2002 to licenced electricians seeking Business Council of Sustainable Energy (BCSE) accreditation to carry out installation work, as well as training for those with a personal interest in this emerging field. The Renewable Energy Centre at Regency Campus has developed appropriate links with industry bodies.
  • Recreation, Sport and Tourism
    Program staff and students have been busy preparing for the well being of staff and students on the Challenge trip. Determining and planning needs, assessing conditions, sourcing food, menu planning and stock control have all been part of their important role, plus participation as drivers and passengers. Many elements of the project provide practical hands-on experiences: pre-race, during race and post-race. From body work, to electrical, electronics and solar cell development, the challenge is on to adequately prepare all components, understand technology and related energy resources, and ensure all backup systems are in place.

The Advertiser Solar Collectable

During the Panasonic World Solar Challenge race, The Advertiser will distribute a Solar Car Collectable kit to primary school students to enhance awareness of the interactive roles of particularly electronics and renewable energy. See the Solar Energy Lab Kit at The Advertiser's NIE website.
