Studying a TAFE SA footwear production course will equip you with a broad base of skills for designing and making hand-crafted footwear. Your studies include the classical styles of Oxford, Derby, Court shoe and elastic ankle boots. In addition to these you will research and develop the concepts and history of footwear, and applying new ideas.
Once you have graduated, you will be suited to a career producing custom made footwear. You will be able to operate as a sole proprieter or in partnership or cooperative ventures to product quality products for the lower-to-mid to high-range complexity levels of the custom made footwear market. The skills you will learn include:
- knowledge of the materials used in footwear production
- designing and making patterns
cutting and sewing custom made shoe components
- hand lasting
- foot anatomy principles
- selecting/making lasts
- stuff cutting
- assembling and finishing custom made shoes
- determining client requirements
- fitting custom made footwear
- history of footwear
- business planning.
